i'm new....

Don't know anything about making a sig or an avatar, but i would like to learn please help if you can

no i don't but if they cost something i will have to hold on till it's payday again. What is the best one to use and how much is it????

you should look on the ika boards, we have a lot more tuts there than here, but hopefully that will soon change.

GIMP as Scott has mentioned is one of the best for beginners to start out on, you will find as you get more use to using the functions there that you may need to get more brushes and fonts but they are fairly easy enough to download.
A couple of sites I find useful for this are dafont.com for different fonts and deviantart.com for brushes. You can also find the odd tutorial on deviantart if you are ever game to try something new.
Otherwise as one great artist told me just muck around and see what you can come up with, you will soon find a style that suits you.

It is a little above beginner but its definitely worth trying

if you want the background to be invisible then save the file as .png if you save it as .jpg you will always end up with a white background.

schatz, try rendering a bit more closely to the render (baby) but thats how I made my first sigs.
